Fire Safety Science and Engineering is concerned with the efficient protection of life and property. To achieve this aim it relies heavily on mathematical modelling. This short course examines the role of mathematical evacuation models in fire safety science and in particular their formulation, limitations, application and interpretation of model predictions.

Who should attend?

These courses are aimed at all sectors of the building industry - building engineers, architects, fire safety engineers/consultancies and the regulatory authorities.

Aims

  • To introduce human psychological response to fire.
  • To introduce human physiological response to fire products.
  • To introduce the concepts and limitations of evacuation modelling.
  • To familiarise students with software used in the computer simulation of evacuation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the short course, those participating should:

  • be familiar with the range of human psychological and physiological responses to fire;
  • be familiar with evacuation model assumptions;
  • have an understanding of the capabilities and limitations of evacuation modelling software;
  • be able to use egress software to assess the evacuation performance of a structure under fire conditions;
  • be able to interpret model predictions.

Indicative Content

Behavioural response of occupants to evacuation, people movement through smoke, evacuation time criteria, human behaviour on stairs, flow models, current evacuation models, building-EXODUS evacuation model, FED toxicity models.

Main Activities

Concepts and techniques will be introduced and demonstrated in seminars. Those attending will gain experience in using the methods in "hands-on" tutorial and workshop sessions.

Social Events

A course dinner will take place on the Tuesday of the course week in a local 久久精品 restaurant.

Specific pre-requisites

This short course is intended for those in the fire safety profession i.e. safety consultants, safety officers, architects, engineers, fire brigade officers, etc. Those attending are expected to be able to use PC Windows and operate a PC.

A detailed timetable will be available shortly.

Course Fees

Course fees are detailed in the table below.  A discount is given to course places sponsored by the Fire Brigade or a Local Council.  A further discount applies when registering 8 weeks before the start of the course.

Fees include lecture material and notes, lunches, morning and afternoon tea/coffee and the course dinner.  Delegates will also be provided with a 1 month trial licence for EXODUS and/or SMARTFIRE.
