The Race Action Group works to strategically deliver the University’s Race Action Plan and the application for the Race Equality Charter.
We are currently in the second year of implementing our plan which includes several significant projects for projects this academic year:
BAME Leadership programme:
Initiated and headed by Jas Seehra-Pearce, a BAME Leadership programme (LEAP into Leadership) is being developed to support aspiring managers. The programme aims to equip them with essential skills that will facilitate career advancement and progression into higher-ranking roles.
Allyship programme:
Spearheaded by Dr Myrtle Emmanuel, we are collaborating with our colleagues to establish a comprehensive Allyship Programme. This initiative focusses on cultivating core allyship principles for BAME Staff, delving into the essence of being an ally. Participants will acquire practical skills and knowledge to effectively support them.
Anti-Racist Training:
Under the leadership of Jas Seehra-Pearce and Dr Myrtle Emmanuel, we will be initiating the advancement of our Anti- Racist training . This involves establishing a working group to identify the needs at all staff levels, ensuring the training is tailored to be effective. Our goal is to have this in place by January 2024.
Race Equality Charter:
In parallel, progress is underway with the Race Equality Charter. The Race Equality Self-Assessment Team, co-chaired by Noel-Ann Bradshaw and Zoe Petit, has been established. Plans are actively developing to gather the necessary data for our application, aligning it with the university's Race Action Plan. Shirley Joseph is overseeing the project management of this crucial undertaking.
I believe that our university can and will be a world leader in taking action against racism. And I would like to encourage everyone to do their part.
