Special Educational Needs: Leading Effective and Inclusive Practice (National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination), PGCert

This award develops your knowledge and critical understanding of key concepts and contemporary debates, enabling you to lead and co-ordinate SEN provision effectively in educational settings.

The PGCert in Special Educational Needs: Leading Effective and Inclusive Practice (National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination) is delivered online and completed within one academic year. It will enable existing and aspiring SENCos (who have completed an induction period) to develop the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to meet National College for Teaching and Leadership's (NCTL) learning outcomes for the National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination.

This award is recognised in England as a professional qualification of high standing which must be held by school-based SENCos within three years of their appointment. Participants with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS, EYTS or QTLS) will achieve a PGCert Special Educational Needs: Leading Effective and Inclusive Practice (National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination). Participants who do not have Qualified Teacher Status will gain PGCert Special Educational Needs: Leading Effective and Inclusive Practice, though not the National Award.

How you will learn

Teaching

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Participants will examine theory and practice relevant to SEN leadership and coordination.

Class sizes

Lectures/seminars (with 15-20 students) are attended online, while, depending on your circumstances, tutorials can be face-to-face and/or online.

Overall workload

Five days attendance is required for each module (i.e., there are 10 taught days). Each module is supported by a Virtual Learning Environment, where participants can access key readings, resources and additional materials, and also participate in the online discussion forums.

Assessment

All participants complete an action-research assignment for both modules. The focus is on supporting practitioner researchers to meet the learning needs of the students with whom they work, and to enhance participants' voices in decisions that impact their professional lives.

Participants working toward achieving the National SENCO Award will also have to complete a 'Reflective Practice Portfolio'. To help participants complete this portfolio, they will be given specific tasks between sessions. The portfolio will show evidence of how participants have met the learning outcomes, and how they fulfil the Department of Education requirements for the role of SENCo.
